Most cloud breaches trace back to basic misconfiguration, not sophisticated attacks. These controls should be automated from day one.
Identity is the perimeter
In the cloud, identity and access management is the primary defence. Enforce MFA everywhere, use roles instead of long-lived access keys, apply least privilege ruthlessly, and audit permissions regularly. Unused credentials and overly broad policies are the most common findings in security reviews.
Automate the guardrails
AWS Config rules, Security Hub standards and GuardDuty threat detection should be enabled across every account and region from the start. Encryption at rest, blocked public access on storage, and centralised logging are configuration choices — automate them so they cannot be forgotten.
Multi-account structure
Separating production, development and security tooling into different AWS accounts under an Organisation limits blast radius dramatically. A compromise in a development account should never be able to reach production data.
