Six pillars, hundreds of questions — but the core ideas are simple. What the framework actually asks of your architecture.
The six pillars, simply
Operational excellence: can you run and improve this system? Security: is data protected and access controlled? Reliability: does it recover from failure? Performance efficiency: does it use resources well? Cost optimisation: are you paying only for what you need? Sustainability: are you minimising environmental impact?
Reviews catch drift early
Architectures drift as features ship under deadline pressure. A Well-Architected Review — a structured walkthrough of a workload against the pillars — surfaces high-risk issues before they become incidents. Run one for critical workloads annually, or after major changes.
Prioritise ruthlessly
A review typically finds dozens of improvement items. Fix the high-risk issues first — usually around backup, identity and monitoring — and plan the rest into the roadmap. Perfection is not the goal; managed risk is.
