Multi-cloud is often sold as risk management but delivered as doubled complexity. When it makes sense — and when it really does not.
The hidden cost of two clouds
Every additional cloud multiplies the skills, tooling, security controls and operational runbooks your team needs. The portability gained is often theoretical: applications built on managed services do not move easily regardless of how many providers you use.
When multi-cloud is right
Genuine drivers include regulatory requirements, acquisitions that bring another cloud with them, best-of-breed services for specific needs, and negotiating leverage at enterprise scale. If none of these apply, depth in one cloud usually beats breadth across two.
Portability without multi-cloud
Containers, infrastructure as code and avoiding unnecessary proprietary lock-in give you credible exit options from a single cloud — most of the flexibility benefit at a fraction of the operational cost.
