Lambda and containers on ECS or EKS are both excellent — for different shapes of workload. How to choose without ideology.
Where serverless shines
Event-driven, spiky or low-traffic workloads are ideal for Lambda: you pay per invocation, scale is automatic, and there is no infrastructure to patch. APIs, file processing, scheduled jobs and integration glue are natural fits.
Where containers win
Steady high-throughput services, long-running processes, and applications with specific runtime or dependency needs are usually cheaper and simpler as containers. Containers also ease portability and local development for larger teams.
Most systems need both
Real architectures mix the two: containerised core services with Lambda handling events, notifications and scheduled tasks. Choose per component based on traffic pattern, team skills and operational model — not fashion.
