Your ServiceNow Upgrade Checklist: Skipping a Release Is Not a Strategy

ServiceNow releases twice a year, and falling behind creates security and support risks. This checklist keeps upgrades boring — which is exactly what you want.
Why upgrades get delayed
Heavy customisation is the usual culprit. When core records have been modified without discipline, every upgrade produces hundreds of skipped records that nobody dares to resolve — so the upgrade gets postponed, and the problem compounds.
The checklist
Review the release notes for features you use and deprecated functionality. Clone production to a sub-production instance and run the upgrade there first. Resolve skipped records deliberately — accept the new baseline where customisation adds no value. Run your automated test suite and a focused regression pass on integrations, portals and notifications.
Finally, communicate early: users should know what is changing, when, and where to report issues.
Stay current, stay safe
ServiceNow supports the current and previous release. Beyond that you lose patches and support. A disciplined upgrade rhythm — planned like clockwork twice a year — is far cheaper than an emergency catch-up project.
